FACT SHEET

WHO ARE WE?

Adoption Rhode Island is a private non-profit organization dedicated to finding permanent adoptive homes for children with special needs.  Adoption Rhode Island also provides information and referrals to all persons interested in adoption.  Adoption Rhode Island has found adoptive homes for over 1000 children.

WHO ARE THE CHILDREN

The majority of the children are between the ages of 5 and 16.  Some are brothers and sisters who need a home together.  Many are African-American, Latino or multiracial.  Some have physical, emotional or intellectual disabilities.  The majority of them have been victims of abuse or neglect and all live in state care in foster families, group homes or institutions.

HOW DO WE RECRUIT AND SUPPORT ADOPTIVE FAMILIES?

Adoption Rhode Island recruits families by raising public awareness about the adoption process and the Rhode Island children currently waiting for adoptive families.

• WJAR-10's Tuesday's Child segment profiles waiting children and features adoption success stories and adoption-related topics every week during the noon and 5pm Tuesday newscasts

• Adoption Rhode Island sponsors free monthly information meetings for people interested in learning more about adopting children from state care.

• We maintain a photolisting book of pictures and profiles of waiting children

• We publish a quarterly newsletter that provides information on all aspects of adoption

• Our website is a highly effective tool for recruiting nationwide

• We work collaboratively with both Adopt USKids and Wendy's Wonderful Kids on national recruitment efforts

In addition we:

• Hold quarterly adoption parties to strengthen the adoption community and to provide an opportunity for prospective parents to meet waiting children

• We provide a range of child and family support services
